  • The annual Times Higher Education (THE) World University rankings highlight outstanding teaching and research across the world as Chinese, French and German institutions rise in rankings
  • UK, USA and Republic of Ireland universities maintain strong share of rankings with the UK taking the top spot
  • Study Group partner University of Sheffield features in the top 100 with three  university partners in the top 175

Congratulations are due to Study Group’s UK, USA and Republic of Ireland university partners whose work to offer excellent levels of teaching and to support student attainment and wellbeing have again been highlighted in the annual THE World University rankings. US institutions now take 36.3 per cent of the share of votes for teaching and 38.1 per cent for research, whilst UK institutions hold 13 per cent of the share of votes for teaching and 12.8 per cent for research.

The global rankings highlighted the rise in non-Anglophone universities, including those in China, where the country’s reputation for increased teaching quality is primarily driven by increasing levels of government investment in the sector.

The UK’s reputation for academic quality retains the country’s standing as a quality destination for global education, albeit with a slight decline year on year amid funding challenges. UK, Irish and USA universities were praised for their work overall including the quality of education provided, facilities and the wider student experience.

Three Study Group partner universities rose through the rankings from 2024 positions, within the top 175:

  • University of Sheffield - 98
  • University of Leeds – 123
  • Durham University - 172

Whilst Cardiff University, University of Aberdeen, University of Sussex and University of Surrey maintained top 250 positions in the global rankings.  University College Dublin also remains in the Top 250 universities. Our US partners Florida Atlantic University and the University of Nebraska Omaha also showed positive moves in their rankings.

Congratulating university partners on their success, Provost and Chief Academic Officer Professor Elena Rodriguez-Falcon said, “We are incredibly pleased to see that the teaching quality and academic experience at many of our global university partners has been recognised in this year’s THE Global Rankings. As the reputation of universities in emerging education markets increases, this provides students with increased choice and opportunity to experience higher education in places they may not have historically considered.  For those seeking an education in traditionally well-renowned institutions in the UK, USA and Ireland, today’s rankings highlight the level of teaching quality on offer.  Our warmest congratulations to our partners and colleagues in universities who work hard to make a difference to students’ education and experience on a daily basis.  The recognition is so well deserved.”
